Why is skincare so important?

There’s loads of advice everywhere you look about the best skincare to use for your skin type, which is great, but I think sometimes we forget what are skin actually does for us!

The skin is our largest organ and is very complex. There’s different layers, it controls our temperature in different ways, protects us and constantly regenerates.

Protection

The skin offers protection from harmful environmental aggressors like UV rays. and bacteria.

  • It has an acid mantle, which helps prevent bacteria entering our bodies and causing an infection.

  • It also has Melanocytes which are responsible for protecting skin from UV rays. These are what produce Melanin which give us our skin pigmentation - the more Melanin, the darker our skin, hair and the iris’s in our eyes.

Pores

The outer layer of our skin is waterproof and repels water, but it can choose certain oils to absorb, in order to penetrate through to the cells. Basically we can absorb anything on our skin through our pores.

Synthesizes Chemicals

  • The skin synthesizes chemicals resulting in complex chemical reactions. These help keep our skin strong by constantly regenerating and repairing damaged skin.

  • Another example is the skin converting the sunlight into Vitamin D.

Controlling Body Temperature

The Dermis layer contains blood vessels which nourish the skin with nutrients and help regulate body temperature.

  • When we are too hot, the blood vessels will enlarge to allow blood to circulate more closely to the skins outer layer in order to release heat

  • When we are cold, the blood vessels narrow to retain heat better

The skin does a whole lot more than this too but this is a quick overview for you to understand how amazing our skin is!
